英文数字谐音

Have you ever noticed how some numbers also sound like words? It's an idea I came up

with in math class.

你有没有注意到有些数字听起来也像单词？这是我在数学课上想出来的点子。

I passed a note to my friend, "Want to come to the mall this weekend? Let's just go 4 fun!"

我给朋友递了一张字条：“这个周末想去商场吗？我们去玩吧！”

注：4 和 for的读音相同，这里用了谐音。

She wrote back, "Sure! We can walk there if it's not raining. I like the food there. One time, I 8 a whole pizza."

她回信说："好啊!如果不下雨的话，我们可以走着去。我喜欢那里的食物。有一次，我吃了整个比萨饼!"

注：8 和 eat 的过去式 ate 的读音相同，这里用了谐音。

看到这篇文章，我不禁哑然失笑。这么多年的英语工作环境里，英语母语者也喜欢用谐音和双关（pun）开玩笑，这些梗大概率比较冷，有时候也难get到，也是文化差异的一种体现了。

简单举几个例子：

What did a late tomato say to other tomatoes? 一个迟到的番茄会对其他的番茄说什么？
I will ketchup (catch up). 我能赶上。 *ketchup 番茄酱

I only know 25 letters of the alphabet. Why? 26个字母我只认识25个。为什么？
I don't know Y (why). 我不认识Y（我不知道为什么）。*Y与why同音

Which is faster, hot or cold? 冷和热，哪个更快？
Hot. Because you can catch a cold. 热更快，因为你能追上冷/会感冒 catch a cold。

Why is “dark” is spelled with a “k” not a “c”? 为什么dark不能写成 “darc”？
Because you can’t c (see) in the dark. 因为你在黑暗里看不见啊。

Who is closer to you, your mom or your dad? 谁和你更亲近？妈妈还是爸爸？
Mom is close, because dad is farther. 妈妈更近，因为爸爸更远。*Father 与 Farther谐音。
